Wyoming Whiskey Honors Grizzly 399 with Limited Edition ‘Queen of the Tetons’ Bourbon
In a heartfelt tribute to the beloved Grizzly 399, Wyoming Whiskey has released a special limited-edition bourbon named “Queen of the Tetons.” This unique blend commemorates the life and legacy of the iconic bear who was a symbol of the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem, capturing the admiration of wildlife enthusiasts worldwide.
Celebrating Grizzly 399’s Legacy
Grizzly 399 was no ordinary bear. Standing seven feet tall and weighing over 400 pounds, she was renowned not only for her size but for her role as a matriarch in the Grand Teton National Park. Over her 28 years, she successfully raised 18 cubs and became a magnet for photographers and tourists from around the globe.
Her tragic death in an accident near the park left a significant void, inspiring Wyoming Whiskey to create a bourbon that would honor her memory and enduring impact.
The Art of Bourbon Crafting
Wyoming Whiskey’s master blender, Brendan Cook, embarked on a meticulous journey to craft this bourbon. Using the company’s three pillars of flavor—caramel/orange/vanilla, dark dried fruits, and spice—Cook selected barrels from distinct areas within the warehouse, where temperatures vary dramatically, to achieve the perfect blend.
The result is a 99-proof spirit with an alcohol by volume of 49.5%. The “Queen of the Tetons” hits the nose with honey and ripe field berries layered with cinnamon spice and delights the palate with a white chocolate mocha taste, complemented by notes of red fruit and rich brown sugar. The finish leaves a lasting impression with hints of candied ginger and soft vanilla.
Extremely Limited Release
Anticipation for this limited release is high, with fewer than 720 bottles available. These will be sold at specified locations across Wyoming, including the Wyoming Whiskey Shop in Kirby and the Jackson Barrel House.
To further honor Grizzly 399, Wyoming Whiskey is auctioning the 399th bottle, with proceeds supporting the Grand Teton National Park Foundation. The company is also donating $20,000 to the foundation to aid in grizzly bear education and conservation efforts.
A Final Toast
David DeFazio, co-founder of Wyoming Whiskey, reflects on the unique spirit of Grizzly 399, describing her as the true “Queen of the Tetons” for her resilience and unforgettable presence. The bourbon bottle features an evocative image of the bear captured by nature photographer Thomas Mangelsen, serving as a powerful reminder of her legacy.
This limited-edition bourbon is more than just a drink—it’s a tribute to nature’s grandeur and a call to preserve it. As Brendan Cook noted, the flavor profile chosen for the “Queen of the Tetons” is a testament to the spirit of the majestic bear, ensuring that her impact continues to be felt by all who savor a sip.
