Bidding for Bourbon: Kentucky’s Online Auction Offers Rare Spirits

In a groundbreaking move, the state of Kentucky is launching an online auction that promises bourbon enthusiasts a chance to bid on some of the rarest spirits, including the coveted Old Rip Van Winkle and Blanton’s Gold. This auction, organized by the Kentucky Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, aims to raise funds for alcohol education programs while giving connoisseurs the opportunity to own a piece of bourbon history.

The Auction Details

The online auction begins on November 27th and concludes on December 11th, providing a two-week window for interested bidders to make their offers. The auction, approved under new legislation, allows anyone over the age of 21 to participate. However, successful bidders must collect their prized bottles in Frankfort, as shipping is not available.

What’s on the Block?

  • Two bottles of Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year
  • Blanton’s Single Barrel Gold with Japanese markings
  • A diverse “stock the bar” package with wine, vodka, rum, and Jack Daniel’s Vanilla

Other notable spirits include E.H. Taylor bourbon, Eagle Rare 10 Year, and a special Maker’s Mark signed by jockey Mike Smith. The collection also boasts a rare Four Roses Small Batch Barrel Strength 2011 and an Old Forester “Prohibition Repeal” gift set, among others.

Why This Matters

“We are proud to help finance educational programs that promote responsible alcohol use and enhance youth awareness,” says ABC Commissioner Allyson Taylor. With no reserve set on the bottles, the auction not only supports education but also adds an element of excitement for bidders.

Kentucky’s Bourbon Legacy

Kentucky’s relationship with bourbon runs deep, making these auctions a significant event. They provide a dual benefit of supporting educational initiatives and celebrating the state’s rich bourbon culture. With plans for more auctions in 2025, bourbon aficionados have much to look forward to.

How You Can Bid

  1. Visit the auction website at abcportal.ky.gov during the open period.
  2. Create an account and ensure you’re eligible as a bidder.
  3. Place your bids on desired bottles and track the auction progress.

Don’t miss this extraordinary chance to own some of the most sought-after bourbons while contributing to a worthy cause. Whether you’re a collector or a new enthusiast, this auction is a unique opportunity to expand your collection and immerse yourself in Kentucky’s bourbon history.
